Moroccan Al Haouz earthquake: 8 months later

Islamic Relief has released a new report detailing our response to the devastating earthquake that struck central Morocco on September 8, 2023.

The 6.8 magnitude earthquake killed families as they slept in their beds and flattened entire villages. The ensuing aftershocks also caused untold damage in the surrounding areas and were felt throughout the country.

Communities were left in ruins

The earthquake was the strongest to hit Morocco in more than 60 years. Nearly 3,000 people died, while thousands more were injured.

More than 2.8 million people have been affected – including 100,000 children.

Eight months after the disaster struck, many in the affected communities are still struggling to put their lives back together. 500,000 people have been forced to flee their homes and are now living in makeshift shelters that offer little protection from the elements.

The road to recovery is long, and the reconstruction program is both expensive and complex.

Immediate and long-lasting response

Within hours of the disaster, Islamic Relief launched a £10 million appeal to help survivors.

To date, we have completed 9 humanitarian projects, reaching nearly 46,000 people in 100 villages with vital life-saving assistance.

Islamic Relief distributed more than 3,100 food baskets to survivors

Islamic Relief continues to help survivors meet their most urgent basic needs, while also focusing on the longer-term interventions needed to help improve and rebuild their lives for the future.

This includes providing basic medical services and health education in affected communities, by launching 27 health convoys and installing latrines and showers.
