GLADSTONE, N.J. — A minor earthquake shook parts of northern New Jersey Friday morning in the same area that has become a hotbed of tectonic activity.

The US Geological Survey said the quake struck Gladstone, New Jersey, the same city that was hit by an aftershock following a 4.8-magnitude earthquake in April.

The mild quake was felt around 4 a.m. throughout northern New Jersey counties, including Somerset, Morris and Hunterdon. Earlier this month, the US Geological Survey reported a 2.6 magnitude earthquake in Gladstone.

The northern counties of New Jersey have recently become somewhat of a hotbed for minor earthquakes and aftershocks. The 4.8-magnitude earthquake was felt on April 5 in places from New York City to Philadelphia, and at least 50 aftershocks were recorded.

Earthquakes are less common in the eastern regions of the United States than on the western edges because the East Coast does not lie on a tectonic plate boundary. The US Geological Survey said that 13 earthquakes of magnitude 4.5 or stronger since 1950 have been recorded within 500 kilometers of Friday's quake. The strongest earthquake was the 5.8 magnitude earthquake in Mineral, Virginia, on August 23, 2011, which shook people from Georgia to Canada.
