New Jersey was hit by a 2.9 magnitude earthquake near Gladstone overnight

GLADSTONE, New Jersey (WABC) — A 2.9 magnitude earthquake centered near Gladstone shook parts of New Jersey early Friday, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.

More than 670 people reported feeling the quake around 3:50 a.m

No damage was reported.

The latest earthquake comes seven weeks after a 4.8-magnitude earthquake centered in northern New Jersey, startling millions of people across the tri-state and beyond.

People from Baltimore to Boston and beyond reported feeling the ground shaking that day (April 5, 2024) and dozens of aftershocks have occurred since then.

This earthquake was the largest in the Tri-State area since 1973.

Earthquakes large enough to be felt by many people are relatively uncommon on the East Coast. Since 1950, there have been about 20 earthquakes with a magnitude greater than 4.5, according to the USGS. This compares to more than 1,000 on the West Coast.
