Episcopal Relief and Development renews its partnerships to provide earthquake recovery in Türkiye and Syria

Episcopal Relief and Development continues its partnerships with ACT Alliance, Diakonie Katastrofenhilfe (DKH) and International Blue Crescent (IBC) to administer community-focused relief in Turkey and Syria following the devastating 2023 earthquake.

In February 2023, earthquakes in Turkey and Syria affected nearly 18 million people, killed more than 55,000, and injured hundreds of thousands more. More than a year later, millions of displaced families are still living in temporary shelters, children are unable to attend school, and family heads are facing economic hardship.

Working with ACT Alliance, DKH, IBC and local implementing partners for the second year, Episcopal Relief and Development is working to create safe and accessible housing and provide opportunities for children, women and the elderly to resume their lives after the earthquake. Relief will include food, water, education, financial support and mental health.

Through our partnerships with community organizations, Episcopal Relief and Development is able to be present in many places at once, serving displaced people and meeting their unique needs.” More than a year after this major disaster, we are still working to Ensure support for emerging needs and interventions that build resilience.”

The 2024 programs will build on relief and resilience-building projects from the previous year, where completed projects helped 35,000 people access clean water and 10,000 families with food, medicine, winter supplies and mental health support in Syria. Likewise in Turkey, 3,000 people learned new skills that helped them earn income, and 10,000 families received direct cash assistance and services to meet urgent needs. In 2024, Episcopal Relief and Development and its partners will continue to focus on hygiene, sanitation, safe housing, and helping families become financially independent.
