Residents of central South Dakota were surprised Thursday afternoon to feel the ground shaking beneath them.

At about 2:40 Central Time, a 3.7 magnitude earthquake struck the area, with its epicenter about 24 miles northwest of Pierre along the banks of the Missouri River, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) — an organization that tracks earthquakes across the country. the world.

“My whole house shook because of the bridges,” said one of hundreds of comments posted on Facebook by local radio station KCCR.

Although the tremor only seemed to create a lasting memory for area residents who experienced it, federal officials in the area did not pass it entirely by.

Officials with the Army Corps of Engineers, which monitors and maintains Oahi Dam west of Pierre, told the Dakota Radio Group they have protocols in place for such events.
