Deadly earthquake caused by San Andreas fault causes $6 billion in damage seen in terrifying footage

The 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake was among the costliest earthquakes in California history

California has seen several of the costliest earthquakes in history.

The US state has become synonymous with natural disasters, causing incredible amounts of carnage and costing billions in damage.

The two costliest earthquakes in California came less than a decade apart, with the first occurring in 1989 and being one of the costliest earthquakes in U.S. history.

The Loma Prieta earthquake occurred on October 17, 1989, and had a magnitude of 6.9 when it struck Santa Cruz County.

While this pales in comparison to other earthquakes in American history — the largest being a 9.2 magnitude quake in Alaska in 1964 — the Loma Prieta earthquake ended up costing $6 billion in damages, which comes out to about $15 billion today when inflation is taken into account. .

Loma Prieta was considered the most visible major earthquake in the mainland United States up to that point, with cameras throughout the affected area capturing the disaster on film.

The earthquake occurred during a live broadcast of the World Series, which brought chaos to Candlestick Park.

In the years since, such videos of the disaster have gone viral, with videos of students being evacuated from their schools and store shelves falling on customers, showing the true extent of the earthquake's devastation.

Some people who lived near the earthquake recalled their experiences in the comments section of these videos.

“I was over 60 miles away from San Francisco at the time and it was shaking my room,” recalls one YouTube commenter.

The earthquake claimed 63 lives (KRCA)

Another commentator explained, “Our large building was old, but it survived after most of its windows were smashed and out into the street.”

“The experience is unforgettable, and we will experience hundreds of tremors in the next month.”

The earthquake, caused by the San Andreas Fault, caused 3,757 injuries and 63 deaths, most of which occurred when a portion of the Cypress Highway collapsed as a result.

While Loma Prieta devastated the San Francisco area, the $6 billion in damage it caused was followed five years later by the 1994 Northridge earthquake.

Although the subsequent earthquake was not as powerful as the one that struck Loma Prieta, it caused $40 billion ($84 billion in today's economy) in damage by striking in the heart of Los Angeles.
