Kanazawa – There has been no progress in the process of removing buildings damaged by the Noto Peninsula earthquake, hampering residents' recovery efforts five months after the disaster.
In Ishikawa Prefecture, where more than 24,000 homes were damaged by the quake, only 95 buildings had been demolished, representing 0.6% of all applications using public funds as of Wednesday.
The government is working hard to strengthen the publicly funded demolition system.
According to the Ministry of Environment and other organizations, there were requests to build 16,240 homes, 95 of which had been demolished using the system as of Wednesday.
In some cases, demolition was carried out without waiting for an application to be submitted, and in other cases, residents paid for the demolition temporarily, but even including these cases, only 383 homes have been demolished in the province so far.
In Wajima, 4,610 applications were submitted, along with 3,359 applications in Suzu.
By the end of October 2025, 22 months after the earthquake, the prefectural government expects to have demolished about 22,500 homes.
The need to obtain demolition approval from homeowners has been a major stumbling block for applications. However, the government announced on Tuesday that such damaged homes can be demolished with public funding at the discretion of the local government without needing the approval of all associated homeowners.
In addition, due to the lack of accommodation facilities at the northern tip of the Noto Peninsula, which was severely damaged by the earthquake, many demolition workers are forced to commute to work from far away areas, including Kanazawa.
“There may be a large gap between the number of demolition requests and the number of houses that need to be demolished,” an official from the Suzhou municipal government said.
Following the Kumamoto earthquake in April 2016, about 35,000 homes were demolished using public funding. As of September of that year, the rate of home demolition using public funding was 12%, and demolition was completed in about two and a half years.
