3.5 magnitude earthquake near South Pasadena shakes parts of Southern California – San Bernardino Sun

A 3.5-magnitude earthquake in the South Pasadena area shook parts of Southern California on Sunday morning, June 2, the US Geological Survey reported.

The epicenter of the quake, which occurred at 9:56 a.m., was 2.3 miles southwest of Pasadena, 2.4 miles west-southwest of Alhambra and 3 miles west-northwest of Monterey Park, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

It happened at a depth of about seven miles.

The quake could be felt in parts of the San Gabriel Valley, downtown Los Angeles and elsewhere.

Seismologist Dr. Lucy Jones, who was in South Pasadena at the time, posted on X that the quake was “sharp and short.”

“The focal mechanism shows an east-west thrust fault, very similar to the 1987 Whittier Narrows earthquake. (Sunday's) earthquake is located west of this event,” she said.

A thrust fault is a break in the Earth's crust, where older rocks are pushed over younger rocks.

No injuries or damage were reported immediately.
