UPDATE – (6 p.m. GMT) – Shortly after this article was published, the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory raised the alert level for Kīlauea Volcano from ADVISORY to WATCH. (BIVN) – Kīlauea volcano is not erupting, but there is a significant increase in the number of earthquakes that started below the summit on Sunday afternoon and continued into the evening.

The USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory maintained Kīlauea's alert level at advisory level, and issued a status report at midday, saying:

On Sunday, June 2, 2024, earthquake activity increased beneath the southern part of Kaluapili (Kilwa Caldera Peak) at approximately 12:00 PM GMT. Seismic activity continues at a depth of 1.2-1.8 miles (2-3 km) below the surface, along with an increase in the rate of ground deformation in the summit area. Currently, there are no signs of an imminent eruption; However, conditions can change quickly.

Scientists have noted that seismic and ground deformation rates remain low under the East Rift Zone and Southwest Rift Zone. Current activity is limited to the summit area.

Kīlauea has been in a state of increasing seismic disturbance below the summit over the past few days. USGS HVO says magma is compressing the system below Halemaʻumaʻu and the southern caldera area, activating seismic activity in the upper eastern rift zone, and in the caldera south of Halemaʻumaʻu.

Before the earthquake wave began on Sunday, scientists warned that changes in the nature and location of volcanic unrest could occur quickly, as could the potential for an eruption.

As of early Sunday evening, no closures had been announced within Hawaii Volcanoes National Park due to increased seismic disturbances.

The Hawaiian Volcano Observatory said it will continue to monitor Kīlauea for any changes and will issue additional notices as needed.
