A strong 5.9-magnitude earthquake shook central Japan on Monday, but no tsunami warning was issued, the Japan Meteorological Agency said.

The epicenter of the surface tremor, which occurred at 6:31 am (2131 GMT), was on the Noto Peninsula, where a devastating earthquake that occurred on January 1 killed more than 230 people.

NHK reported that local officials said there were no immediate reports of damage, but they were still gathering information.

The JMA said Monday morning's quake was followed about 10 minutes later by a second, smaller, 4.8-magnitude tremor in the same area.

The company operating the Kashiwazaki-Kariwa nuclear plant in the area said it had suspended operations to check the damage, according to NHK.

The radio warned that many buildings in the Sea of ​​Japan coastal area may have previously been damaged by the strong January earthquake and its aftershocks.

The January 1 earthquake damaged and destroyed buildings, caused fires and destroyed infrastructure on the Noto Peninsula as families celebrated New Year's Day.
