The strongest earthquake since January 6 hits the Noto region; Buildings were brought down

A woman was seriously injured and buildings collapsed in Ishikawa Prefecture when the first earthquake with a seismic magnitude of 5 above since January 6 struck the devastated Noto Peninsula.

The Japan Meteorological Agency said the quake occurred at 6:31 a.m. on June 3, had a preliminary magnitude of 6.0, and was centered at a depth of about 14 kilometers.

The quake is believed to be linked to the deadly 7.6 magnitude earthquake that devastated the Noto area on New Year's Day.

A seismic intensity above 5 on the Japanese scale 7 was measured in the cities of Wajima and Suzu in Ishikawa Prefecture. Intensity reached below 5 in Noto City.

The agency said that no tsunami was caused by the earthquake.

Since New Year's Day, earthquakes with seismic intensity of 1 or higher have been recorded about 1,850 times, including 12 tremors at upper 5 that occurred in early January.

According to the town of Tsubata, a woman in her 60s was surprised by the tremor and broke her leg when she fell from her bed while trying to seek shelter.

A man in his 20s in Namikawa, neighboring Toyama Prefecture, suffered bruises on his head and hips when he fell while trying to escape.

According to the Wajima Disaster Prevention Department, the recent shaking caused the collapse of five additional buildings believed to have been severely damaged in the January 1 quake.

No injuries were reported as a result of the collapsed buildings.

A woman who works at a company in the Uisimachi area of ​​Wajima said she saw one of the destroyed buildings.

“The two-storey building was completely tilted due to the New Year's Day earthquake. When I arrived at the office around 9am, I saw the first floor of the building was completely destroyed,” she said.

A 41-year-old fisherman in the Misakimachi district of Suzu said he felt the strong tremor when he and his family were about to eat breakfast at home.

“I thought, 'That's enough,'” he said with a tired look.

He said he and his wife picked up their 1-year-old and a crying 2-year-old and jumped out of the house.

The newly built house had withstood the New Year's Day earthquake, but the recent earthquake appears to have caused deformations that prevented the windows from opening.

“When I thought the earthquake had happened again, I had no other feelings but anxiety,” the father said.
