SwRI-led team to strengthen earthquake preparedness

SAN ANTONIO – June 3, 2024 – The Southwest Research Institute will advance models to enhance the resilience of America's transportation infrastructure to earthquakes and improve public safety in earthquake-prone areas. As part of a contract with the US Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), a team led by SwRI will update and improve the liquefaction models. Liquefaction occurs during an earthquake when intense shaking causes soil to temporarily behave like a fluid, losing its ability to support roads and structures.

“For highways specifically, sometimes state and local authorities do not have the luxury of choosing a different construction site to avoid areas potentially susceptible to liquefaction,” said SwRI Senior Research Engineer Dr. Christine Ulmer, principal investigator on the project. .

Over the next five years, a team led by SwRI will expand on previous work done for the Next Generation Monetization (NGL) project. The NGL project is a community collaboration with an open source database of earthquake and liquefaction case histories from around the world.

“We will build on our previous work in LNG to develop predictive models to better understand where liquefaction is most likely to occur and determine its impacts,” Ulmer said.

Monetization is a dangerous phenomenon that can cause catastrophic loss of life and disrupt supply chains. To better identify areas and infrastructure at risk, the team will update predictive models to discover whether costly mitigation strategies are necessary to prevent severe damage in the event of an earthquake.

“That's the goal — to improve public safety and provide the most useful and up-to-date tools for assessing earthquake-related risks on America's roads, bridges and tunnels,” Ulmer said.

The SwRI team will collaborate with researchers from the University of California, Los Angeles, and Oregon State University on this project.
