Earthquakes that struck north-central Japan led to the collapse of 5 homes damaged in the deadly January earthquake

TOKYO (AP) — Earthquakes early Monday again struck the Ishikawa region of north-central Japan, which is still recovering from the devastation of a powerful quake on Jan. 1, but the latest tremors did not cause major damage.

The Japan Meteorological Agency said that a 5.9-magnitude earthquake struck the northern part of the Noto Peninsula, followed minutes later by a 4.8-magnitude earthquake and then several smaller earthquakes during the next two hours. There was no tsunami.

Five homes damaged in the January 1 earthquake in Wajima City collapsed, but no serious damage or life-threatening injuries were reported, according to Ishikawa Prefecture. Prefectural officials said that an earthquake warning in the town of Tsubata, about 100 kilometers southwest of the epicenter, surprised a woman in her sixties who fell from her bed, but her injury was not life-threatening.

Satoshi Harada, a seismology and tsunami official at the JMA, said Monday's quakes are believed to be aftershocks of the 7.6-magnitude quake on January 1. Seismic activity has subsided slightly since then, but Harada urged people to be careful, especially near buildings that were damaged earlier.

Shinkansen high-speed trains and other train services were temporarily suspended for safety checks, but most have resumed, according to the West Japan Railway Company.

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission said no anomalies were found at two nearby nuclear power plants. One of them, the Shika plant on the Noto Peninsula, sustained minor damage, although officials said it did not affect the cooling functions of the two reactors.

Hokuriku Electric Power Company said there were no power outages.

Monday's tremors sparked renewed fear among residents still struggling to recover from damage from the New Year's earthquake. NHK public television showed a number of people leaving their homes and temporary shelters to see if there was additional damage.

“Many people who were living in the evacuation centers must have been afraid,” Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi said, urging caution against the possibility of rockfalls and landslides in areas that were shaken strongly.

Reconstruction is taking place slowly in the mountainous areas of the peninsula, and many damaged homes remain intact.

In Wajima, which was one of the worst-hit areas, a hostel operator told NHK that he immediately resorted to hiding under the reception desk when the first quake struck on Monday. Nothing fell to the ground or broke, but it reminded him of the vibrations from January and made him worry that such a large earthquake would happen even five months later.

The Jan. 1 quake killed 260 people, including those who later died from stress, illness and other quake-related causes, and three others are still missing, according to the Federal Disaster Management Administration. Damage remains, and more than 3,300 residents have still been evacuated.
