The second earthquake in two days shakes Los Angeles

A 3.0-magnitude earthquake struck East Los Angeles Tuesday afternoon, two days after a 3.4-magnitude quake struck nearby.

The latest quake occurred at 3:05 p.m., and was centered a block north of El Sereno Elementary School, in the El Sereno neighborhood of Los Angeles, below the Elephant Hill open space. This is located two miles southwest of downtown South Pasadena and two miles northwest of Cal State Los Angeles

Weak tremors were felt in East Los Angeles, Alhambra, Monterey Park, Vernon, Maywood, Commerce and Bell, according to the US Geological Survey.

The epicenter was located less than two miles south of the Raymond Fault, which runs from northeast Los Angeles through South Pasadena, Pasadena, San Marino, Arcadia, Monrovia, and the unincorporated area of East Pasadena. The fault runs along portions of Eagle Rock, York and Huntington streets and under a stretch of Interstate 110 in South Pasadena.

The Raymond Fault caused the 4.9 magnitude Pasadena earthquake in 1988, a quake that literally threw seismologist Lucy Jones out of bed.

The epicenter of Sunday's 3.4 magnitude quake, which also occurred in El Sereno, was three-fifths of a mile south of Tuesday's quake. The epicenter was two blocks south of the intersection of Huntington Drive and Eastern Avenue.

Weak shaking from Sunday's quake may have been felt more widely, including downtown Los Angeles, Burbank, Pasadena, Elmont, Montebello, Pico Rivera, Downey, Lynwood, and South Los Angeles.

Seismologists have viewed the Raymond fault with concern. It would have erupted almost simultaneously with two faults to the west – the Hollywood and Santa Monica faults.

Evidence of the Raymond Fault has been clear to geologists for decades. The lake, which was located in what is now known as Lacey Park in San Marino, was created by a fault, the result of sinking ground from past earthquakes.

Those historic earthquakes also created the hills that are now part of the Los Angeles County Arboretum and Botanical Garden in Arcadia, as well as those that offer great views of the Huntington Library, home to the estate, library, art collection and gardens created by railroad magnate Henry Huntington.

Compared to the state's faster-moving faults, Raymond moves slowly — about a tenth as fast as the infamous San Andreas Fault. This means that Raymond doesn't get torn as often as San Andreas.

Scientists suspect that the last time the Raymond Fault caused an earthquake with a magnitude of 6 or more was 1,000 to 2,000 years ago. They believe that such events occur every few thousand years on average.

But earthquakes don't happen like clockwork, and scientists can't say with certainty when the Raymond Fault will explode next.

An average of five earthquakes between magnitude 3.0 and 4.0 occur annually in the greater Los Angeles area, according to a recent three-year data sample.
