A photo and story: Taking a rescue in Beirut

(Reuters) – When he first felt the tremor, Reuters cameraman Mohamed Azakir believed that Beirut was struck by an earthquake.

Then he heard the explosion.

Holding his camera, Azake rushed to the streets, trying to locate the source of the explosion.

When he got to the port, he realized he was close. Corpses lay everywhere, and people were screaming.

Azaker saw a man, attached to a vehicle, covered in a thick film of rubble and blood. Initially, Azaker believed that the man died. But then the man opened his eyes and started waving his arms and asking for help.

Azakir summoned some rescuers who were close. In a series of dramatic pictures, the man’s rescue was recorded, while the rescuers also helped move the car to free him. He took pictures of the man who was taken to a stretcher and taken away, and black smoke still billowing from shattered silos in the background.

Rescuers told Azaker that the man was taken to hospital. Reuters could not confirm the identity of the man or the hospital he was taken to.

The biggest bloody explosion occurred in Beirut in peacetime after igniting ammonium nitrate near the port. On Tuesday, the explosion killed at least 145 people, wounded 5,000, and left a quarter of a million homeless.

“It was like a horror movie filmed in a destroyed city,” said Azakeer, who has covered Lebanon since 1981.
