BMKG: 5.7 million magnitude earthquake hits Bengkulu

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – A 5.5 magnitude earthquake shook the west coast of Bengkulu this morning, June 5. The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) recorded the quake at 09:20 Western Indonesia Time (WIB).

The strongest shaking was felt at Mokomoko with the MMI III-IV intensity scale. “This earthquake has no tsunami potential,” Daryono, head of the agency’s Earthquake and Tsunami Center, said in a statement.

He said that based on the results of the analysis, the epicenter of the earthquake was located at sea, 141 kilometers southwest of Mokomoko, and at a depth of 20 kilometers.

“It was a surface earthquake caused by subduction activity of the Indo-Australian plate under the Eurasian plate,” Dariono added.

Aside from Mukomoko, shaking was also felt in Argamakmur in North Bengkulu, Kerinsi in West Sumatra, and Sungai Banyak in Jambi on a less intense scale.

BMKG stated that it has not yet recorded any aftershocks. However, the public is advised to remain calm and avoid cracked or damaged buildings. “Check and make sure that the building you live in is earthquake-resistant enough, or that there is no earthquake damage that could jeopardize the stability of the building before returning to your home.”
