Researchers sail to the site of an underwater earthquake swarm off the coast of British Columbia

The Ocean Exploration Trust's trip to Juan De Fuca Ridge will last 3 weeks and will be broadcast live

In March 2024, more than 200 earthquakes per hour struck the Juan de Fuca Mountain Range on the coast of Vancouver Island.

The BC Ocean Exploration Trust (OET) exploration vessel Nautilus will visit the site for the first time to take a closer look.

“We are about to embark on the annual maintenance cruise for the Northeast Pacific Endeavor Network Undersea Experiment (NEPTUNE) observatory,” said Megan Paulson, Ocean Network Canada (ONC) mission leader. “This is an ocean observatory, where we have a 100-kilometre-long power and fiber-optic cable off the coast of Vancouver Island.”

The Nautilus will be at sea for 21 days after disembarking from the Canadian Coast Guard docks in North Saanich on June 6. The ship will boast a crew of more than 50 people, including scientists, marine technicians, engineers and science communicators, and there will be little downtime when out at sea.

“There is 24-hour monitoring on an expedition like this, so we want to make every second count,” said Allison Fundis, OET's chief operating officer. “So we manage people through different monitoring teams, and there is always someone there to monitor.”

The trip to the Juan de Fuca mountain range will include equipment maintenance at a depth of more than two kilometers underwater. Nautilus will launch remotely operated vehicles, Hercules and Atalanta, which will keep a large number of NEPTUNES' sensors, cameras and instruments on the ocean floor.

“One of the reasons is that the machine completely stopped, and it no longer works at all. It would be a complete tool exchange,” Paulson said.

The trip to the hills will mark the eighth time OET and ONC have collaborated.

“Our collaboration allows us to combine our expertise and technologies to address the challenging operations associated with maintaining ONC’s world-leading, cabled, subsea observatory and to share our work and discoveries widely with those who join us from shore,” Fundis said.

The 24-hour live broadcast will allow viewers to ask questions to various crew members and scientists.
