The ninth anniversary of the Sabah earthquake was commemorated in a memorial service

KUALA LUMPUR: It was nine years ago, but Ridwan Mohd Taib still vividly remembers the chaos that occurred when a 6.1 magnitude earthquake struck the mountainous Ranau district in Sabah state.

He was on vacation at the time and had returned to his village in Kampung Lasing, about 3 kilometers from the city area.

At that time, he was still a member of the East Coast Fire Station of Lahad Datu District.

“I was in my room when the earthquake shook so hard that it shook our house,” said Rizwan, who is now chief of Ranau Fire and Rescue Station.

“I didn't think about anything else and quickly rushed my family to an open field outside the house.

He added: “When we left the house, I saw all our belongings and household items scattered on the ground, but we were grateful that the earthquake did not cause any structural damage to our house.”

Redouane was among those who paid their respects to the victims during a memorial service held to commemorate the ninth anniversary of the June 5, 2015 earthquake.

The ceremony was held at Kyaw Jap Pheu, Timbuhon Gate in Sabah Gardens in Kundasang Highlands, about 92 km from the capital of Sabah, on Wednesday (June 5).

Ridwan places a flower at the foot of the copper plaque erected near the Timbuhon Gate to honor the 18 people who lost their lives in the earthquake.

Those standing there observed a minute of silence in front of the copper plaque containing the names of the 18 victims, which was erected about two kilometers from the Timbuhon Gate.

Tembuhon Gate is the starting point for climbing the mountain, which reaches a height of 4,101 metres, the highest in Malaysia.

A group of Singaporean students and teachers from Tanjung Katong Primary School were killed in rockslides as they climbed the mountain following the 7am earthquake.

The earthquake also claimed the lives of four Sabahan mountain guides.

Heads of police stations, district hospital, Sabah Gardens, district office and information department were also present.

Being a dedicated firefighter, Redwan said his heart was moved to help in search and rescue operations when he learned of victims trapped on Mount Kinabalu.

However, the management had sufficient number of people on the ground after recalling all available manpower at that time.

“We send our condolences to the families of all the victims. The Ranau Fire Department is also extremely grateful for the sacrifices made by everyone involved in the incident.

“Our Mountain Search and Rescue (Mosar) unit is always prepared for any eventuality, with personnel stationed daily on Mount Kinabalu,” he said.

Sabah Parks Director Dr McLaren Lakim said the ceremony was held to commemorate the 18 lives lost in the tragedy and pay respect to their next of kin.

“This tragedy serves as a reminder to improve the Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) or safety measures for climbing Mount Kinabalu.

“This ceremony is also to ensure that climbing the mountain is safe.

“Several new facilities are under construction, including a mountaineering training center at the summit and the construction of the Layang-Layang lodge at km 4 of the climbing route,” he said.
