An earthquake strikes Whyalla, South Australia

A three-magnitude earthquake shook a regional city in South Australia.

The Australian Geosciences Authority said the earthquake occurred southwest of Whyalla, 385 kilometers northwest of Adelaide, on Thursday and at a depth of about two kilometers.

Nearly 70 people reported feeling the quake, most from Whyalla and some who reported they were 30 kilometers away.

Phil Cummins, senior seismologist at the Australian Geosciences Centre, said it was not common for earthquakes to hit Whyalla.

He said that 50 kilometers from the city, about 40 earthquakes had occurred since 1974, but near Whyalla there had been much less activity.

In 1989, a 3.8-magnitude earthquake was recorded 30 kilometers west of the city, while in 1975 a 2.8-magnitude earthquake struck about 8 kilometers offshore.

“If you go within 100 kilometers (of Whyalla), you start to visit places like the Flinders Range that have high seismic activity, so there are many earthquakes that could have occurred,” Cummins said.
