Mataram, Kompass – A 5.1 magnitude earthquake occurred in the West Sumbawa area, West Nusa Tenggara, on Thursday evening (6/6/2024). There were no reports of damage or casualties, but residents of remote areas such as Lombok and Bali felt the shock of the earthquake.

The head of the Mataram Geophysical Station, Ardianto Septiadhi, said in his official statement in Mataram on Wednesday evening that the earthquake occurred at 8:15 pm WIB or 9:15 pm in Weta.

According to Ardianto, based on the analysis by the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), this earthquake had updated parameters of magnitude 5.1.

Ardianto said: “The epicenter of the earthquake is located at coordinates 9.22 degrees south and longitude 116.94 degrees east. It is located specifically in the sea, 52 kilometers southeast of West Sumbawa, NTB, and at a depth of 10 kilometers.”

According to Ardianto, based on the epicenter (the point on the Earth's surface directly above where the earthquake occurred) and the depth of the epicenter (the point below the Earth's surface where the earthquake occurred), the earthquake that occurred was a type of shallow earthquake caused by an active fault beneath the ocean floor with a mechanism Upward sliding movement.

Ardianto added that the earthquake does not have the potential to cause a tsunami. However, the earthquake was felt not only by the residents of Sumbawa Island, but also in Lombok and Bali.

“It feels very good,” said Rudy, 47, a resident of West Lombok. “There was a roar, but I didn’t leave the room.”

Bitoni, 44, who was at Mandalika Hospital in central Lombok, said: “I was in the hospital when the earthquake happened. It was very strong. I wanted to leave the room, but the staff said it was safe.”

According to Ardianto, based on the report from BMKG, the earthquake was felt in Bali, specifically Gianyar, Badung and Denpasar, as well as on Sumbawa Island, specifically in West Sumbawa, Sumbawa and Dombu. It was also felt on the island of Lombok, specifically in Central Lombok, West Lombok, Mataram, East Lombok, and North Lombok.

The tremors felt in these areas were of intensity III on the Modified Mercalli Intensity Scale (MMI), which is used to measure the strength of an earthquake.

He called on the community to remain calm and not be influenced by baseless issues. They should also avoid buildings cracked or damaged by earthquakes.

Residents left a shop in the Bijancik Street area, Mataram City, when a 5.5 magnitude earthquake shook Lombok on Tuesday (13/5/2024) at around 4:11 p.m. As of 5:00 p.m., there were no reports of damage or injuries due to the incident.

“I felt the real vibrations in the house. We felt the vibration as if a truck was passing by,” Ardenato said.

Ardianto added that as of 10:00 pm in Weta, there were no reports of damage caused by the earthquake. The same goes for aftershocks.

“The public is encouraged to remain calm and not be influenced by unaccountable issues. They should also avoid buildings cracked or damaged due to earthquakes,” Ardianto said.

Ardianto also urges the public to inspect their residential buildings and ensure their earthquake resistance before returning to their homes. Also ensure that there is no damage from earthquake vibrations that may endanger the stability of the building.
