The world’s most distant Irish tape: “Senju from Coved”

It has been closed since April, and you can’t reach it by car, and the nearest airport is two days away from hiking – but the world’s most remote Irish bar is the optimism that will soon recover.

The Irish pub in Namsh Bazar, Nepal, rises 3,450 meters above sea level, on its way to Mount Everest.

It has been closed since April 10, after the epidemic forced the government of Nepal to close mountains to climbers.

However, the owner Dawa Sherpa claims that his strip will flourish after infection with the coronavirus.

The government recently announced that it will issue hiking permits for the Himalayan autumn season, which begins in September. International flights – which were suspended in March – are scheduled to resume in August.

A new route, which could open next year, would make it easier to bring beer, food and even billiard tables. Until now, all planes had to be flown to “the world’s most feared airport” – and then carried them for two days along mountain paths.

Dua, 35, grew up in a “small and colorful market town” in Namche Bazaar, where his parents worked in agriculture and livestock.

After studying in Khumjung – “The School in the Clouds” built by Sir Edmund Hillary’s Himalayan Trust in 1961 – he moved to the capital Kathmandu to study business administration. Upon returning home, he worked briefly as a tour guide, before his older brother, who ran a bakery in Namche, saw a hole in the market.

The call for change began in the town – increased tourism had a “huge impact,” says Dawa – but only had one bar. His brother, Forba Tenzing, used to visit an Irish pub in Kathmandu, owned by the Irish people. The brothers gave an idea – can they open the highest Irish pub in the world? Google, and discover Bar Paddy in Cusco, Peru.

“We worked up,” says Dawa. “They were 50 meters below us.” So, in 2011 they proudly opened the Irish Pub – the tallest and most certainly Irish pub in the world.

It is not easy to open a bar in a town without roads. Off-season supplies are transported from Kathmandu to Lukla – a small airport with a short, steep runway.

From there, the porters carry the goods to Namche. The pool table was brought up in the bar this way. “Our table is an ancient Indian classical table, with huge marble slabs,” Dawa says.

“Three or four planks, each weighing 120 kg. We cannot rent mules or yaks because the tracks are so fragile. Everything carried by porters – humans – very carefully.”

They even import Guinness bookstore through Singapore costly.

“We don’t have much [profit] Dawa, who earns 800 rupees ($ 6.70, 5.10 pounds) for a pint of black stuff, says Dawa. “But we are an Irish bar – we have to sell Guinness.”

The tape was a slow start.

The Dawa party admits, “In the beginning, that was not the case.” “But we really tried hard to improve the service, the atmosphere and the interior. Gradually, we were getting there.”

Then, in April 2015, a major earthquake struck Nepal, killing nearly 9,000 people and ending the climbing season. A landslide in Everest killed only 21 people.

“We had to completely close the tape,” says Dua. “We reopened in the fall, but that wasn’t good either.”

After the earthquake, the economic blockade – which started in September 2015 and affected the entire country – increased commodity prices by “four, five, or even six times”. But despite the earthquake and the blockade, the remote Irish Strip remained the world.

“We recovered slowly,” says Dua. “It took us three or four years to get there, but the Irish pub has become the most spoken pub in Namche.”

On a regular day, clients – usually Australian, American, or European – may include “people who just summarized Everest, or people who went to the base camp for the first time”.

“The man who just climbed Mount Everest does not mind spending money,” Dawa says. “He buys drinks from sherpa, porters and friends. People are happy.”

In 2014, Dawa opened a second tavern in the lakeside town of Pokhara, and its manager Chris now runs the Namche Restaurant. So, as they prepared for the Spring 2020 season, things looked good. Then, in March, another disaster came.

Nepal recorded only 60 deaths in 19, and 21,000 confirmed cases. But the injuries are escalating again – and the effect is already huge.

The country was closed from March to July. Remittances from Nepalis abroad fell; Imports from China decreased. Tourism dried up. In the mountains, more than 10,000 guides, drinkers, and other workers lost their jobs. One commercial group estimated that 1 million people in the “mountain belt” would suffer.

But while the Irish pub in Namche is down, it hasn’t come out.

The Dawa organization is cautiously optimistic about the resumption of tourism, and is ready to reopen its doors for the fall season in September, if there is a request. Meanwhile, the new road from Kathmandu could have more impact.

The invitation hopes the highway, already partially open, will reach Lukla within six to eight months, although engineers are telling the BBC that it could take two years.

Either way, the road, when opened, would be a boon to Namche Bazar’s business.

“Once we get to the road, the Nepalese and Indian tourists will be enough for us to survive,” Dawa says.

“You know, 80-90% of the Nepalese people did not see Everest on their own, due to lack of transportation. We have about 55,000 tourists a year in Namche, if things are really good. I think we’ll get more than 55,000 [extra] If we get on the way. “

In addition to the additional clients, the new route will mean that beer – and billiard tables – will not need to be transported. “Prices will drop by 50%,” Dawa says.

However, some things will not change.

The road will only reach Lukla – which means customers will still need to hike for two days to reach the highest and earliest Irish bar in the world.
