The earthquake early warning system has been upgraded in Oregon, Washington and California

The earthquake early warning system operating on the West Coast recently received a major upgrade. ShakeAlert now uses satellite technology to detect seismic activity.

ShakeAlert sends a message to smartphones on the same system that Amber Alert uses. People can also download ShakeAlert apps for their phones.

The amount of time ShakeAlert provides warning before an earthquake strikes depends on how close you are to the epicenter, Melgar said.

ShakAlert has been fully operational in Oregon, Washington, and California since 2021.

It has not yet been activated in Oregon because the state has not yet experienced an earthquake large enough to trigger it.
