An earthquake has been reported in parts of New York State

For at least the second time in less than a month, an earthquake has struck parts of New York State, according to earthquake experts. The quake was felt Tuesday morning, in an area of ​​the state that experiences more seismic activity than one might think.

The recent shaking is not related to the 4.8-magnitude earthquake that struck northern New Jersey last April, which was felt by more than 42 million people in a number of states. More than a hundred aftershocks were felt during the weeks following the moderate earthquake, although none caused any kind of major damage.

A minor earthquake was felt in parts of upstate New York

WCAX reports that a 2.5 magnitude earthquake was recorded in Clinton County, New York on Tuesday morning. The US Geological Survey says the quake was felt at a depth of four and a half miles.

According to CBS News, an earthquake with a magnitude of 2.5 or less is usually not felt, but can be recorded by a seismograph. Earthquakes of this magnitude rarely cause any kind of damage.

The latest quake occurred in the Adirondacks, which NASA/ADS says have seen tremors “regularly measured and felt in this region.” Although not as geologically active as areas of the country near the Pacific coast, the mountain range in upstate New York still gets its share of seismic activity.

According to Adirondack Nature, the mountain range was formed “by a series of continental collisions and breakups, followed by uplift of unknown origin.” Powerful geological forces are still at work beneath the mountains, and the area “is still growing, rising by about 2 to 3 millimeters every year, which is faster than the rate of erosion,” Adirundikalmanak says.

The slow but steady rise is a geological mystery, the Adirondackalmanack says.
