Puerto Rico earthquake: a 4.8 magnitude earthquake hits the Caribbean island

An earthquake with a magnitude of 4.8 struck southern Puerto Rico late on Thursday and felt tremors across the island.

The earthquake struck near the southern town of Guyanella at a depth of seven miles (12 km), according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The tremor was initially reported with an initial size of 5.1 but was later revised to 4.8.

No immediate damage was reported, although many Puerto Ricans were defeated by their family.

“It has been felt everywhere,” Victor Hoyervano, director of the island’s seismic network, told the Associated Press.

He said it is one of the many aftershocks that have occurred since a 6.4-magnitude earthquake in early January, killing one person and causing millions of dollars in damage along the southern coast of Puerto Rico.

In May, 5.5 degrees hit Puerto Rico, shook Ponce and destroyed some buildings.

The epicenter of the earthquake hit off the coast of the Caribbean island, although tremors did not threaten the tsunami.

No one was injured or killed. The US Geological Survey said the aftershocks were recorded up to 90 minutes after the earthquake.

Tremors were felt in Guyanela, where the Thursday earthquake struck, and Guanica, southwest of Puerto Rico.

The earthquake struck as the Puerto Ricans approached their second week of extended closings of the Corona virus.

On July 31, Puerto Rican Governor Wanda Vasquez announced that all bars, gyms, marinas and cinemas across the United States would remain closed until at least August 15.

Beaches remain closed on Sundays and open for the rest of the week only for people who play sports, including surfers, swimmers and runners.

Wanda Vasquez state governor said that face masks are still mandatory, and those who refuse to wear one will be arrested.

The curfew will remain from 10 pm until 5 am in place, and no parties or gatherings will be permitted in short-term rental facilities.

“For a vaccine to be found … we must all do our part,” the governor said.

As of Friday morning, Puerto Rico reported 19,349 coronavirus infections and 258 deaths, with a population of approximately 3.2 million.
