A new geological study examining a massive fault line along the west coast of the United States and Canada has shocked the scientific community. It revealed that the fault is capable of generating earthquakes that could be among the worst the world has ever witnessed.

The study found that plates in the Cascadia subregion were moving toward each other and could soon stick together and close, leading to pressure buildup. Scientists have warned that when the pressure is released, it could eventually trigger a massive earthquake and possible tsunami.

The Cascadia subregion could cause earthquakes up to magnitude 9.0, which could send tsunami waves 100 feet or more high, she said. Areas in the United States that could be affected include California, Oregon and Washington.
