A series of earthquakes shake SoCal – a sign of something bigger coming?

Over the past few weeks, a series of earthquakes have rocked SoCal. Ojai, El Sereno, and Costa Mesa were all the epicenters of not just one earthquake, but several, which is unusual. While the quakes were no larger than magnitude 3.6, many still wonder if this series of smaller earthquakes is a sign of a larger quake to come. What does science say?

Joining us today on AirTalk is Christine Goulet, director of the US Geological Survey's Earthquake Science Center

Why would annual theme park passes be so good?

Why would annual theme park passes be so good?

Disneyland announced last Wednesday that it would pause new sales of annual Magic Key passes indefinitely — meaning only current ticket holders will be able to take advantage of the program for the foreseeable future.

Disneyland revamped the program in August 2021 to try to combat overcrowding, and since then, each annual pass level has had varying availability. Even with higher prices and more off dates, it could still be a pretty good deal for dedicated fans. In a recent sale that included all four pass options, the cheapest tier — reserved for Southern California residents in zip codes 90,000 to 93599 — sold out in less than nine hours.

But Disneyland isn't the only park with an annual traffic problem — and some believe the programs no longer serve the theme parks or their patrons. Joining the discussion of the economics and challenges of annual passes is Dennis Spiegel, owner and founder of Cincinnati-based International Theme Park Services, a global consulting firm for the amusement and theme park industry.

SoCal History: The Los Angeles Civil Defense siren, a decades-old artifact that still stands today

SoCal History The Los Angeles Civil Defense siren, a decades-old artifact that still stands today

Originally an alert system for Angelenos following the attack on Pearl Harbor, the civil defense siren was a device intended to warn people of an impending catastrophic event should it occur. Moving from the anxiety of World War II to the fears of nuclear war during the Cold War, Angelenos saw more than 200 sirens across the city raised in neighborhoods that were intended to serve as a warning sign. Since sirens have been around for so long, sporting a different look, we thought it would be helpful to discuss how they came to be and how their testing kept Angelenos on alert in a way that was unique to earthquake drills that exist to this day. . Kim Cooper and Richard Chaffee, co-founders of Esotouric, a Los Angeles-based tour company, join us to provide a primer on civil defense sirens in Los Angeles.

What does the future of nuclear energy look like?

What does the future of nuclear energy look like?

Policy experts and even environmentalists are divided over what to do about nuclear power. There is a lot to this, but here are the overarching arguments: We are facing a climate crisis. Nuclear energy is a form of emissions-free energy that many would like to use to help solve said crisis. But nuclear energy also produces waste, and there are concerns about nuclear disasters and nuclear weapons. Today, we look at what policies with and without nuclear power could look like, and what the consequences could be. We wonder what are the biggest pros and cons of nuclear energy? If not nuclear, then what? How can we activate alternative sources such as wind and solar energy? What are the other technical capabilities? Joining the discussion are MV Ramana, professor of public policy and global affairs at the University of British Columbia and author of the forthcoming book, Nuclear Is Not the Answer: The Folly of Atomic Energy in the Age of Climate Change, and John Parsons, an economist. at MIT who focus on energy and climate policy.

Why is there a continuing decline in sex in movies?

Why is there a continuing decline in sex in movies?

You may have heard rumblings about the chaste and asexual nature of modern Hollywood. Now, a new study has found that there is much less sex in movies today than it was twenty years ago. The study, which looked at the 250 highest-grossing films in America, found that sexual content in Hollywood films has decreased by approximately 40% since 2000. To put that into perspective, in 2000, less than 20% of the highest-grossing films had decreased By approximately 40% since 2000. No sexual content at all. This comes on the heels of a UCLA study last year conducted by the Center for Scholars and Storytellers that found Generation Z is more interested in seeing platonic relationships on their screens than sexual content. But is Generation Z really to blame for this decline?

In recent years, discussions around the topic have heated up on social media, especially given the MeToo movement and the rise of on-set sex coordinators, with many people questioning what actual narrative and cultural purpose sex scenes serve for the medium. So, what's the real reason behind this decline in sex in movies? Does culture determine box office or vice versa?

Joining us to help us better understand the data and Hollywood's relationship with sex are Rachel Lloyd, deputy culture editor at The Economist, and Amy Nicholson, LAist film critic, New York Times film writer and host of the Unspooled podcast. What are your thoughts on the decline in sex in films, is it a good thing? Let us know by calling us at 866-893-5722, or emailing us at [email protected]
