The Turkish government cuts rental assistance for earthquake survivors

The Turkish government sent a text message to survivors of the February 6 earthquakes receiving rental assistance informing them that the program will end after June.

Since April 2023, the government-run Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) has been providing rental assistance to renters whose homes were found to have been damaged by earthquakes.

The Disaster and Emergency Management Department stated in its letter that the program is scheduled to last for 12 months but will end with the 15th month payments.

MP for the main opposition Republican People's Party, CHP, Wali Agbaba, responded against the decision by sharing AFAD's message and said: “Rent assistance for (former) landlords will continue, and assistance for renters will be cut.”

Agbaba stated that the treatment of tenants whose homes were destroyed or who were evicted from their homes by landlords is unacceptable.

The CHP deputy stressed: “How will tenants pay rents, which have already increased at least five times after the earthquake, without rental assistance?” The state should not discriminate between earthquake victims and this wrong practice must be abandoned immediately.”

The Disaster and Emergency Management Department pays 5,000 Turkish liras per month to renters whose homes were damaged and 7,500 liras to homeowners.
