The meteorological agency said that a 4.8-magnitude earthquake occurred near Bu'an Province in the southwest of the country on Wednesday, the strongest earthquake to hit the Korean Peninsula and surrounding waters so far this year.

The quake occurred 4 kilometers southwest of North Jeolla Province, 204 kilometers south of Seoul, at 8:26 a.m. at an estimated depth of 8 kilometers, according to the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA).

The authority said that the epicenter of the earthquake was at latitude 35.7 degrees north and longitude 126.71 degrees east, noting that it was the strongest earthquake to occur on the Korean Peninsula and its surrounding waters this year.

The North Jeolla Provincial government said it had not received any reports of facility damage or casualties related to the quake.

The quake was felt in many parts of the country, including the greater Seoul area, Chungcheong provinces and southeastern regions.

A total of 213 cases were reported nationwide related to feeling tremors from the quake as of 8:50 a.m., including 77 reports in North Jeolla Province, according to firefighters and Interior Ministry officials.

Citizens in Jeonju, the capital of North Jeolla Province, called fire authorities to say they felt a fairly strong shaking for a few seconds, mostly on their way to work. A Jeonju resident said: “At first, I thought it was an explosion coming from a construction site. I was shocked for a moment.”

Residents in Sejong, about 140 kilometers from Buan, reported that chairs and televisions in offices and homes were shaking at the time of the quake.

The Korea Meteorological Agency initially said the quake had a magnitude of 4.7, but revised it after detailed analysis.

This was the first magnitude 4 earthquake to hit an area with a radius of 80 kilometers from where the quake occurred, according to the authority, adding that there is no information about the fault in the area, as it is not a common place for such a strong force. Earthquake occurrence.
