A 4.8 magnitude earthquake strikes southern South Korea

SEOUL – A 4.8-magnitude earthquake struck southwestern South Korea on June 12, with witnesses reporting a “thunderous roar,” though no major damage was reported, the South Korean Meteorological Agency said.

The quake occurred four kilometers south of Buan County, about 205 kilometers south of Seoul, at 8.26 a.m. local time (7.26 a.m. Singapore time), according to the Korea Meteorological Administration.

An alert text message was sent to citizens across the country, advising residents of the affected areas to be careful of the possibility of falling objects and aftershocks.

Prime Minister Han Dak-soo instructed the government to implement “comprehensive” measures in response to the quake, with local reports saying the cities of Sejong, Daejeon and Cheonan also experienced noise and shaking.

Yang Seo-yeon, a Puan resident, told AFP that she heard a “loud roar” as she was preparing to go to work in the morning.

“It sounded like I was in the middle of a huge construction site. Then my house started shaking.”

No major damage had been reported as of the morning of June 12, according to authorities.

Unlike neighboring Japan, the Korean Peninsula rarely experiences strong earthquakes.

The strongest earthquake the country has seen to date was a 5.8-magnitude quake that struck Jeonju, also located in the southeast, in September 2016.
