A 4.8-magnitude earthquake struck an area near southwestern Buan County, North Jeolla Province on Wednesday morning, marking the strongest earthquake detected on the Korean Peninsula and surrounding waters so far this year.

North Jeolla Province rarely experiences earthquakes, and this was the first time an earthquake with a magnitude of more than 4 occurred in the region.

According to the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA), the epicenter of the quake was discovered 4 kilometers south-southwest of Buan at 8:26 a.m., at 35.7 degrees north latitude, 126.71 degrees east longitude, and at a depth of 8 degrees. Kilometers.

More than a dozen aftershocks were reported in the following hours in the area, including a 3.1-magnitude earthquake at 1:55 p.m., according to the agency. The agency advised people to be careful for their safety, as additional tremors could be felt in areas close to the epicenter.

The earthquake was felt by residents of North Jeolla and other surrounding areas.

“I felt the earthquake this morning. I live on the 15th floor, but I felt the tremors coming from the ground. They lasted for several seconds,” said Park Hyo-seon, a resident of Gunsan, North Jeolla Province, about 26 kilometers from Buan.

“I was staying at the house and I felt the entire building shaking moderately for about 10 seconds,” said Yoo Kyung-jung, a resident of Jeonju, North Jeolla Province, about 36 kilometers away. “I thought a helicopter was passing by.”

The Ministry of Interior and Safety raised the government's disaster alert status to level one, the lowest level in a three-stage system.

“Only minor damage was reported. There were no immediate reports of injuries or serious damage,” Interior Minister Lee Sang-min said.

The Ministry of the Interior and local fire departments received a total of 309 reports of earthquakes across the country and 32 cases of damage to public facilities, such as cracks in the exterior of buildings.

“However, there are major infrastructure facilities such as the Hanbit Nuclear Power Plant and the Cheonghu Reservoir near the earthquake site, so I ask relevant ministries and local governments to carefully monitor the situation,” Li said.

The quake did not affect any nuclear power plants, according to the Nuclear Safety and Security Commission.

President Yeon Suk-yeol, who is currently on a state visit to Kazakhstan, instructed his officials to conduct rapid safety checks and assess the damage.

“The president called for continuing to provide prompt and accurate information to the public so that people do not worry about the possibility of an aftershock,” his office said in a statement.

Prime Minister Han Dak-soo ordered relevant ministries and agencies to assess the damage as soon as possible, inspect key infrastructure such as power plants and transportation networks and ensure the safety of the public.

The quake was the 16th strongest earthquake recorded since 1978 when the Korea Meteorological Agency began measuring tremors. The last major quake occurred in May last year, when a 4.5-magnitude quake was detected in the waters off the coastal city of Donghae in Gangwon Province. In February 2018, a 4.6-magnitude earthquake occurred in the waters off the city of Pohang in North Gyeongsang Province. The strongest earthquake was detected in Gyeongju, North Gyeongsang Province, in September 2016, when a 5.8-magnitude earthquake struck the area.
