A massive earthquake of this magnitude could trigger tsunami waves 30 meters high, killing thousands of people living on the West Coast and causing billions of dollars in property damage. Researchers say the situation is much worse than imagined. The fault in the subsea lines was discovered after a 41-day research cruise which included listening activities on the sea floor and mapping the subduction zone accordingly.
