Taylor Swift fans in Scotland danced so hard they set off seismographs | Science and technology news

Fans at Taylor Swift's concerts in Scotland last weekend danced so hard they set off seismographs, according to the British Geological Survey (BGS).

Seismic activity was recorded up to six kilometers away during the three concerts last Friday, Saturday and Sunday at Edinburgh's Murrayfield Stadium, with some of her biggest hits causing a surge in activity each night.

“Honestly, it was the most magical and wonderful night,” said Lindsay Hempenstall, who was in attendance at the Eras party on Friday.

“A stadium full of complete love and joy, singing at the top of our lungs and sharing it with over 70,000 people and my nine-year-old daughter.”

The Friday night is believed to be the most attended show in Scottish history, which Swift described as “the wildest way to welcome a girl to your town”.

Fans dancing along to the music was the main cause of the seismic activity that reached its peak during the song…Are You Ready for It? Every three nights.

At that point, the Swifties were transferring enough energy through their dancing and stomping to charge 6,000 car batteries, or about 80 kilowatts, according to BGS.

“Scotland's reputation for providing some of the most enthusiastic crowds clearly remains intact!” BGS seismologist Callum Harrison said.

Smash hits Cruel Summer, Champagne Trouble and Shaking It Up also sparked great activity across the three gigs. Bethann Bryan was there Saturday night and chose Shake It Off as her favorite song of the night.

“It was fantastically loud!” She said. “It was amazing to hear everyone singing. 73,000 people singing for three and a half hours – everyone was so happy.”

“[My daughter] “I enjoyed singing out the window on Friday night,” she added. “We live about 1.5 miles away and Taylor was clear as a bell!”

Although by only a small margin, Friday night was the busiest party, when Swifties moved on the ground by 23.4nm.

Even Beyoncé, Harry Styles and Bruce Springsteen couldn't compete with the movement generated by Swift's fans.

Although the three stars' concerts in Edinburgh in May 2023 were recorded on seismographs, they were beaten by the Swifties' dance numbers with around 10 nanometers of movement.

“It's amazing that we were able to measure the reaction of thousands of concertgoers remotely through our data,” Harrison said.

“The opportunity to explore seismic activity resulting from a different type of phenomenon was very exciting.”

Although the concerts are detected by BGS instruments, the vibrations are unlikely to be felt by anyone other than those in the immediate vicinity, according to the organization.

Swift's 15 UK shows are expected to boost the UK economy by nearly £1 billion, with fans spending not just on tickets, but also on accommodation, travel and pre-show parties.

Although the Scottish leg of her tour has finished, Swift is heading south, arriving in Liverpool on Thursday, then Cardiff and finishing at London's Wembley Stadium for eight nights in total later this month and in August.
