Taylor Swift fans sparked earthquake spotters as Eras tour rocked Edinburgh

Seismographs captured the spirited dancing of tens of thousands of Taylor Swift fans at her record-breaking concert in Edinburgh.

Nearly 73,000 Swifties attended each of the three concerts at Murrayfield Stadium from Friday to Sunday, and their enthusiastic reception for the star meant seismic readings were detected up to 3.7 miles away.

The British Geological Survey (BGS) said fans on the first night of Swift's massive international Eras tour generated the largest amount of seismic activity, with dance-induced spikes clearly visible during her songs Cruel Summer, Ready For It? And get rid of it.

Seismic monitors recorded fans dancing in time to the music and peaking at 160 beats per minute during the song Ready For It?, with BGS saying the crowd was transmitting about 80 kilowatts of power — the equivalent of about 6,000 car batteries.

The four-minute applause during the Champagne Troubles the same night caused a huge spike in the screens.

A similar pattern occurred on the three nights, with Friday recording 23.4 nm of motion compared to 22.8 nm on Saturday and 23.3 nm on Sunday.

Seismic activity from the concerts was detected at two monitoring stations, the furthest of which was 3.7 miles away at the BGS office in central Lille.

Seismic monitors have recorded activity during other dates on the Eras tour, including Los Angeles and Seattle in the United States.

Callum Harrison, seismologist at BGS, said: “BGS is the national body responsible for recording earthquakes to inform government, the public, industry and regulators, and allow for a greater understanding of earthquake risk and planning for future events.

“It's amazing that we were able to measure the reaction of thousands of concert-goers remotely with our data. The opportunity to explore seismic activity caused by a different type of phenomenon was exciting.”

BGS said vibrations from the concert were unlikely to be felt by anyone other than those in the immediate vicinity.

Edinburgh City Council agreed to increase the stadium's capacity to 72,990 spectators per night, and Swift thanked fans for breaking the “all-time attendance record for a stadium show in Scotland three times in a row”.

The American star will play the first of three nights at Anfield in Liverpool on Thursday, and will then move on to Cardiff and London.

They will then play three nights in Dublin and, after a run of shows in Europe, return to London in August to finish the UK and European tour.
