Taylor Swift and her Swifties set off earthquake sensors in Scotland

Taylor Swift and her fans (known as “Swifties”) activated seismic sensors again, and this time British Geological Survey (BGS) equipment set off 6 kilometers (3.7 mi) from the concert venue.

Swift is currently touring the UK, playing at Murrayfield Stadium in Edinburgh from June 7-9. By monitoring the seismic activity generated by the concert and dancing, BGS was able to find differences in activity depending on the song being played.

“BGS monitoring stations around Edinburgh recorded seismic activity resulting from the concerts,” they explained in a statement. “Each of the three evenings followed a similar seismic pattern, with ‘…are you ready for it?’ ‘Rough Summer’ and ‘Champagne Problems’ leading up to the more significant seismic activity each night.”

Analyzing the data, BGS found that the most enthusiastic dancing occurred on Friday, even though each concert created detectable seismic activity.

“The activity was generated primarily by fans dancing in time to the music, peaking at 160 bpm during the song “…Are You Ready for It?”, with the audience transmitting approximately 80 bpm. [kilowatts] “of energy (equivalent to about 10-16 car batteries),” BGS added.

The activity was not huge, causing a movement of 23.4 nm on Friday when the activity peaked, and is unlikely to be felt by anyone outside the immediate vicinity. However, it's great that we can use seismic detectors to find out which Taylor Swift songs fans have danced to the most.

This is not the first time Taylor Swift and her fans have caused such an earthquake, as a previous concert in Seattle caused a 2.3 magnitude earthquake.
