A 4.8-magnitude earthquake struck southwest South Korea, cracking walls and causing other minor damage.

SEOUL, South Korea — A 4.8-magnitude earthquake cracked walls, spilled items from store shelves and caused other minor damage in a fishing community in southwestern South Korea on Wednesday, but no injuries were reported.

The earthquake in Buan, estimated at 8 kilometers (5 miles) deep, was the strongest earthquake detected in South Korea this year.

The National Fire Agency said it had so far confirmed eight cases of minor property damage in Buan and the nearby city of Iksan, including cracked walls in homes and a warehouse, at least two wall tiles broken, and at least one window broken. It was also powerful enough to knock items off store shelves.

Jo Yeo-jin, an official with the North Jewella County Fire Department, said officials received nearly 80 phone calls from area residents who felt the shaking. More than 200 similar calls were made by residents in other areas, including 38 in the central province of North Chungcheong and seven in the country's capital, Seoul, according to the National Fire Agency.

There were no reports of any injuries as of Wednesday morning.

South Korean Prime Minister Han Dak-soo, the country's No. 2 official behind President Yoon Suk-yeol, instructed officials to be alert for possible aftershocks and prepare to safely evacuate residents and protect key infrastructure such as power plants and transportation networks.

South Korea's Nuclear Safety and Security Commission said it assessed that the quake did not affect safety at any of the country's nuclear power plants, and that it found no anomalies after conducting emergency inspections.
