British tourists in Rhodes were hit by a 4.8 magnitude earthquake on Wednesday evening.

The quake, whose epicenter was in the Aegean Sea about 67 kilometers (41 miles) southwest of the island, caused noticeable tremors but did not cause serious damage.

Many vacationers took to social media to describe their experiences.

One person shared: “Yes, like the whole airport shook so fast out of nowhere, the walls and floor shook. It was weird and crazy.”

Another tourist said: “I just felt it in Rhodes in our hotel room.”

A third joked: “Near Faliraki. The table was shaking on the hotel balcony. I thought I had eaten too many.”

Others reported that they felt the earthquake in different parts of the island, including Gennadi and Lindos.

The European Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC) noted that nearby cities such as Gennadi, Lardos, Archangelos, and the island's capital, Rhodes, may have felt weak tremors. The tremor was also felt by the residents of Türkiye.

An EMSC spokesperson said: “Our monitoring service has identified a second report from the German Research Center for Geosciences (GFZ) which also listed the magnitude 4.9 earthquake.

“Based on preliminary seismic data, the earthquake should not have caused any major damage, but it may have been felt by many people as mild shaking in the epicenter area.”

Earthquakes are relatively common in Rhodes. In January 2023, a 5.9-magnitude earthquake struck the island, and the tremors were felt as far as Egypt and Lebanon.

The largest earthquake recorded in the history of Greece occurred in 1956 on the island of Amorgos, measuring 7.7 on the Richter scale and causing major destruction and a tsunami, killing 53 people and injuring 100 others.
