A plane with WHO trauma and surgical supplies arrives in Beirut, Lebanon
A plane carrying 20 tons of WHO medical supplies landed in Beirut, Lebanon, to support the treatment of patients injured in the big explosion that took place in the city on August 4th. The supply will include 1,000 traumatic interventions and 1,000 surgical interventions for people suffering from injuries and burns due to the explosion.
The shipment was picked up this afternoon from the WHO logistics center in Dubai using a plane donated by the government of the United Arab Emirates, a key partner of the WHO in response to health emergencies.
“Our hearts and prayers are to all those affected by this tragic event as we continue our mission of serving all the people of Lebanon while saving lives and providing essential health services. We work closely with national health authorities, health partners and hospitals that treat the wounded to identify additional needs and provide immediate support, ”said WHO Representative in Lebanon Dr. Iman Shankiti.
As a result of the explosion, 3 hospitals in Beirut are now dysfunctional and 2 hospitals have been partially damaged, leaving a critical gap in hospital bed capacity. Injured patients have been transferred to hospitals across the country, all the way to southern Said and northern Tripoli, and many facilities are overcrowded. The WHO will distribute supplies to priority hospitals across Lebanon that receive and treat injured patients.
This latest emergency comes in the context of the recent civil unrest, the great economic crisis, the outbreak of COVID-19 and the great refugee burden. The legendary resilience of the Lebanese people has rarely been tested so seriously. Ensuring continuity in response to COVID-19 – including targeting the most vulnerable for assistance – is a priority for both the Ministry of Public Health and the WHO.
