Tremors reported in Iron County as 3.1 earthquake felt near Canarraville – St. George News

KANARVILLE — Iron County residents may have felt the tremor Saturday evening as seismologists reported a magnitude 3.1 earthquake at 10:49 p.m.

According to a US Geological Survey report, the depth of the earthquake was estimated at 8.4 miles. On Sunday morning, 25 residents reported feeling shaking on the government website.

“The Intermountain seismic belt in southern Utah coincides with the transition between east-west-trending extension of the Basin and Range to the west and the more stable crust of the Colorado Plateau to the east,” the USGS website said of the area. “North-east-west-trending plateau-scale normal fault-scale tectonic movement, which results in horizontal extension, characterizes this part of Utah.”

Most recently, the USGS reported a 2.9 magnitude earthquake about 6 miles northwest of Enoch on June 9. According to the University of Utah seismic stations, two small earthquakes measuring 2.2 and 2.4 have been reported in the southern Utah area over the past two weeks.
