Greek coastguards have killed dozens of migrants in the Mediterranean over a three-year period, witnesses say, including deliberately throwing nine people overboard. They are among more than 40 people who were either forced out of Greek territorial waters or returned to the sea after reaching the Greek islands, a BBC investigation has suggested. In five of the incidents, the migrants said they were thrown directly into the sea by Greek officials. In four cases they were said to have landed on the Greek islands, but rounded up. In other incidents, migrants said they were placed on inflatable rafts, which swelled and appeared to be punctured. The Greek coast guard rejected all allegations of illegal activities. They said they acted professionally and with “great respect for human rights”. The BBC showed the former head of the Greek coastguard's special operations where 12 people were loaded onto a Greek coastguard ship and then abandoned on board. Speaking without knowing he was being recorded, he said it was “manifestly illegal” and “an international crime”. The Greek government has long been accused of deporting migrants by forcefully pushing people in boats towards Turkey, which is illegal under international law.
