Recent earthquakes within the “expected aftershock sequence”

Christchurch is still experiencing a higher rate of earthquakes than before 2010, but it is within the expected behavior of the 2010 aftershock sequence, Jeunet says.

Over the past week, GeoNet recorded 10 earthquakes southwest of Christchurch, with magnitudes between 1.2 and 3.5.

The largest event occurred at 5.45pm on Saturday 15 June, receiving more than 4,000 reports.

A company spokesperson said: “The M3.5 event was shallow at a depth of 4km, which explains why it was felt by many in the area around the epicenter.”

“Earthquakes in the Canterbury region remain at higher levels than before 2010, and this includes earthquakes recorded by GeoNet around Christchurch.

“However, this is within the expected behavior of the 2010 Canterbury aftershock sequence, even after more than a decade since the 2010-2011 earthquakes.”

GNS scientists continue to closely monitor and produce seismic forecasts for the Canterbury region generated by computer models.

“Aftershock sequences usually subside over time – but it may take years, decades, or even centuries for earthquakes in an area to return to the previously affected state – before the mainshock.

“It is difficult to attribute small-scale earthquakes to a specific fault, but the events we recorded last week are within the area that erupted during the February 2011 M6.2 Christchurch earthquake and the area where we have recorded aftershock events for the past 13 years.
