A 4.2-magnitude earthquake shook western and central Jamaica

KINGSTON, Jamaica – A 4.2 magnitude earthquake shook parts of western and central Jamaica Tuesday afternoon.

The Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM) confirmed the earthquake with a post on X, formerly Twitter, stating that the quake occurred 15 kilometers southwest of Christiana in Manchester.

“The Seismic Unit confirms that an earthquake was felt in Manchester Parish, located approximately 15 kilometers southwest of Christiana, with a preliminary magnitude of 4.2, and a time of occurrence of 5:46 p.m.,” ODPEM said.

Social media users reported that the quake was also felt in St Elizabeth, Clarendon, Westmoreland and St James.

“I think the house went from before to now and it's shaking. All the kids start crying,” one user in Christiana said.

Another user said: “It sounded like a heavy truck and then it shook.”
