An earthquake in northeastern Iran kills 4 and injures more than 120

A 5.0-magnitude earthquake struck Kashmar County in Iran's northeastern Khorasan Razavi Province on Tuesday, killing at least four people and injuring more than 120 others, according to the official IRNA news agency.

Kashmar Governor Hojatollah Shariatmadari said that 35 of the injured were taken to hospital, while the others were treated and released. He explained that two of the victims died as a result of falling debris, while the other two died when a building collapsed in the village of Zandahjan, close to the epicenter of the earthquake.

Shariatmadari stated that all service, rescue and relief organizations in the province were on high alert following the earthquake. The earthquake occurred at 1:24 pm local time (0954 GMT) at a depth of 6 kilometers, and caused damage to buildings and cars in the area.

Ali Moniri, managing director of the Khorasan Razavi Red Crescent Society, told the Islamic Republic of Iran News Agency that two families were trapped under the rubble in Zandehjan. Community rescuers were working to extract these individuals. Al-Muniri added that the full extent of casualties and damage in the province is still being assessed.

Kashmar Province is located 230 kilometers southwest of the provincial capital, Mashhad, and has a population of 163,000 people, according to the Islamic Republic of Iran News Agency.
