A 4.7 magnitude earthquake hits Islamabad

PESHAWAR: A 4.7 magnitude earthquake struck the northern parts of the country including Islamabad, Rawalpindi and cities across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

According to the National Seismological Center in Islamabad, tremors from the earthquake were felt throughout the twin cities as well as cities of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province including Peshawar, Swat, Parachinar, Malakand, Lower Dir, Hangu, Charsadda, Swabi and their surrounding areas.

Tremors were also recorded in North and South Waziristan regions.

According to the monitoring center, the epicenter of the earthquake was in the southeastern region of Afghanistan, while its depth was recorded at 98 kilometers.

Earlier this month, a 3.2 magnitude earthquake struck parts of Karachi including the Clifton neighbourhood.

The epicenter of the earthquake was 15 kilometers northeast of Karachi and at a depth of 22 kilometers, according to the Seismological Center.

However, no loss of life or property due to the earthquake was reported.

This was the third time the city experienced a minor earthquake in the past few weeks before June.

On May 2, a 2.3 magnitude earthquake struck parts of the city including Gadap, Katohar and adjoining areas in Malir district.

The epicenter of the earthquake was 38 kilometers northeast of Malir and at a depth of 84 kilometers, according to the Seismological Center.

Likewise, a 3.2 magnitude earthquake struck Malir district of Karachi on April 24.

Natural disasters such as earthquakes are not common in Pakistan, as the country lies on the border of the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates.

Large parts of South Asia are seismically active because the tectonic plate known as the Indian plate is pushing northward toward the Eurasian plate.

Recent earthquakes underscore the importance of disaster preparedness and mitigation measures.
