God speaks to us all the time. But we can be so busy, distracted, and exhausted that we cannot even think properly. We know computers can have a system overload. People are overloaded all the time. How do we hear God while we are busy or anxious?

Jesus often says, If you have eyes to see … if you have ears to hear … if you do not receive God’s message, where are your eyes and ears focused?

Scriptures today remind us of how the Word of God came in a timely, reassuring and meaningful time. The readings are about fear, faith, cowardice, storms, and an eternal God with us.

Elijah is asked to go out and stand on the mountain – God passes by. But there was a strong storm with strong winds. And an earthquake. And a colossal fire. Danger is everywhere.

Nevertheless, Elijah embraces this opportunity. He searches for God and listens to him. But God is not in the wind, the earthquake, or the fire. Then we were told, there was a “little whisper.” Elijah feels the presence of God.

It’s easy to fall apart in the storms of life, worry anxiously, “Where is God now?” Elijah’s experience with God in a small whisper should remind us just how close God really is.

The gospel story found that the disciples in their little boat were tossed by a storm into the sea. Elijah remained focused when surrounded by fierce storms. But Jesus’ disciples fall apart in panic.

Jesus comes to them and says what is mentioned most in the Bible, “Do not be afraid.” Then he said to Peter, Come. We have to take credit for Peter. He may have only stepped a few steps on the water before starting to sink, but he took a few!

When the storms come, many people want to hide. They lock themselves away in their safety deposit box. Sadly, it is not the storm that is entering them, but their fear.

As we move forward through the COVID-19 pandemic, we must remain vigilant and practice all safety protocols. However, the tragedy continues for all victims of this terrible virus. How sad it is to realize that there are also victims whose suffering has caused a pandemic of fear.

Do not be afraid. Last Sunday, we heard from Saint Paul the most confident statement about God’s position in the midst of this plague, or any obstacle, “Nothing can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord!”

Where do we stand? Are we hiding away? Do we live in fear, and do enough to manage? Or do we live as people of faith? We may not be able to literally connect and cling to each other, but we can find new ways to connect with each other, to build bridges of hope with others, to show the world what it means to truly love each other.

If you have eyes to see…. Witness the beauty of life and love that God creates every day. If you have ears to hear … Hear the word of God and stories of faith … Share the story of your faith with others. Be on the “front lines of faith” at a time when we need your love, faith, and beauty … very often.
