The Shirokanedai House project by ROOVICE is the renovation of a 50-year-old wooden residence in the Minato district of Tokyo, Japan, converting it for continued rental use. The primary focus was to strengthen the two-story 1970s house to withstand earthquakes, with safety forming the basis of aesthetic and functional upgrades. Japanese tradition and contemporary design enhance the property's functionality, integrity and aesthetic appeal. The first floor was opened up by removing the dividing walls, repainting the gray walls white, and replacing the tatami flooring with hemlock. The kitchen and hallway have been updated with clinker tiles and a custom-made countertop. The bathroom was remodeled to create more space, with updated Tamaishi tile flooring. The small kitchen upstairs was removed, and new tatami mats and shoji doors were installed, keeping the traditional elements.

The airy interior design is based on crisp white walls and wooden floors

Due to the high demolition costs in Japan and the good condition of the property, the owner, an experienced real estate professional, chose to undertake the renovation. The original design of the first floor featured dark, segmented spaces. To create a more open and welcoming environment, ROOVICE removes the partition walls and ceiling panels, merging the former kitchen with two tatami rooms into one spacious area. The previously gray walls were repainted bright white, and new windows were installed, allowing natural light to flood the space. The Japanese studio is replacing the tatami flooring with hemlock flooring, covering a traditional kotatsu stove pit. Clinker tiles now adorn the kitchen and hallway floors, and a custom-designed kitchen table adds a modern touch. A distinctive triangular-shaped built-in cabinet in the corridor wall is highlighted by a diagonal wall connecting it to the kitchen wall, and a new glass door, which reflects the style of the cabinet, enhancing functionality and aesthetic cohesion.

In the bathroom, the space was reconfigured to accommodate the washing machine. The front room's floors have been updated with functional PVC coverings, while a new bathtub and white tiles have been installed on the walls. Traditional Tamaishi tiles, reminiscent of the Showa era, are chosen for bathroom and toilet floors. The wooden steps leading from the living room to the garden have been replaced with stone steps, strengthening the connection between the interior and exterior spaces. On the upper floor, the small kitchen in the corridor was removed, and the wall was tiled with the same clinker tiles used on the ground floor. New tatami mats and refurbished shoji doors in the tatami rooms maintain the connection to the home's roots. The floors and windows of the external corridor were updated to match the ground floor, and all the walls were painted white to create a cohesive, bright atmosphere. The third room on the second floor has seen its old wood paneling replaced with new, and a beige carpet has been laid, providing a soft contrast to the wooden elements. The porch is being waterproofed, and the fencing has been repainted black, completing the fresh look of the house.
