A 5.7 million-magnitude earthquake shakes the mountains of Papua

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – A 5.7 magnitude earthquake shook Papua Begunungan or the mountains of Papua this morning, June 21. The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported that the earthquake was centered on the ground at 09:11 Eastern Indonesia Time (WIB).

Based on preliminary data, the epicenter of the earthquake was determined to be 68 kilometers northeast of Yalimo and at a depth of 78 kilometers.

The intensity of the vibration was measured on the II-III MMI scale in Wamena, meaning it was felt inside as if a truck was passing. The weaker intensity of Scale II MMI was reported in Jayapura City and Jayapura District.

Daryono, head of the agency's Earthquake and Tsunami Center, said in a written statement that the earthquake was caused by deformation of rocks in the Earth's crust. The earthquake's magnitude was also updated to 5.5.

On Thursday evening, BMKG also recorded two earthquakes in Central Maluku and Bawyan in East Java, with magnitudes of 2.6 and 3.6 respectively. The earthquake occurred in Saparwa, Central Maluku, at 21:31 local time and was epicentered at sea. Meanwhile, the tremor was detected in Baoyan at 19:41 local time, and its epicenter was also at sea.
