A low-magnitude earthquake hits Mtito Andi, shaking many buildings

On Saturday, June 22, a low-magnitude earthquake struck Mtito Andi town in Makueni, shaking several buildings. The 4.4 magnitude earthquake struck the city at around 3 a.m. before spreading to other nearby towns.

According to the US Geological Survey, an agency that deals with identifying volcanoes and earthquake zones, the quake was at a very shallow depth of 8.6 kilometers and was widely felt in the area.

The report also revealed that the shallow depth of shaking caused the earthquake to be felt more strongly near the epicenter.

The low-intensity earthquake was also felt by residents of Galolei, Voi, Tata Taveta, Kilifi and Tana River, which are towns close to Mtito Andi.

“People likely experienced very weak shaking there,” part of the report said.

However, the magnitude of the earthquake weakened as it spread to other parts of the region including some parts of Nairobi County where residents experienced weak tremors.

Weak tremors also occurred in some parts of Machakos, Makueni, Lamu, Garissa and Embu.

“So far, we have received 53 reports of this earthquake from Kenya and Tanzania. Of these, 52 people indicated that they felt it,” the agency revealed.

“The majority of reports came from Nairobi (28 reports), the capital of Kenya with a population of 2,800,000.”

The latest report comes almost a week after residents of Mai Mahiu in Nakuru County expressed concerns following reported incidents of earthquakes in the area.

According to residents, they felt the earthquakes between 11 pm on June 17 and around 7 am on June 18, claiming that each of the four tremors lasted about two minutes.

One of the residents revealed that we are currently living in fear due to the earthquake incidents that occurred in this place since yesterday.

Residents added: “So far, we have witnessed tremors four times. The first tremor occurred around 11.25 pm yesterday.”
