People are being tricked into believing that a major earthquake occurred in Oregon in 2001 by artificial intelligence

The images in question were first posted on the “Midjourney” subreddit last year. The series of twenty different snapshots was titled: “2001 Great Cascadia 9.1 Earthquake and Tsunami – Pacific Coast US/Canada.”

The photos included scenes of rubble, collapsed bridges, worried families, reporters and even former President George W. Bush amidst all the devastation.

Completely realistic – pixels and all – many were shocked to discover that the images were completely fake.

Dozens of people have since flocked to the comment section of the post to share their reactions to the AI ​​hoax.

Some found the whole situation quite strange.

“Were you the only one who was like, ‘How come I don’t remember this happening?’ until seeing the subreddit?” One person admitted.

However, others took the opportunity to highlight issues using “misinformation”.

One person pointed out: “If people today are so easily misled by social media posts that contain only text, what are perfect quality photos and videos going to do? Do you think they will check the source?”

Another added: “We don't actually know what parts of history are true. I think we're having a very difficult time now with misinformation.”

The disturbing thread eventually made its way to X, where software expert Justine Moore took the time to debunk the fake images.

She posted that “something wild” was currently going on on the platform.

The tweet continued: “People are telling stories and sharing photos of historical events.”

But she explained to her followers that the evidence is far from real, because the decades-old event never happened.

Some weren't easily fooled by the AI-generated images with one X user saying: “It's pretty obvious since none of these look like real people one bit.”

Justine then replied: “Don't you think these look real?? Except for the baby's hand which has 7 fingers, everything looks very real to me…”
