More than 80 earthquakes were recorded in Hawke's Bay, Te Tairawhiti this week

GNS Science says it has recorded more than 80 earthquakes in the Hawke's Bay and Te Tairawhiti regions since it began this week.

The swarm of shallow but frequent tremors began Tuesday before 6 a.m.

Seismic officer Elisabetta d'Anastasio said the tremors were recorded about 20 kilometers northeast of Wairoa in Hawke's Bay.

The largest quake, with a magnitude of 4.5, was felt by 240 people early Wednesday morning.

Such swarms are “not uncommon” in the region, D'Anstasio said.

“It's very common to have this cluster of increased seismic activity in Wairoa and also the entire east coast.”

The quakes occurred on a well-known set of fault lines extending from the steep hilly area north-east of Wairoa to the east coast between Mahia and Gisborne.

She added that the mild tremors were likely to subside in the next few days, and that the swarms were a good reminder to prepare for a major earthquake.

He added: “The swarm that we are observing now does not indicate anything alarming, but it is always a possibility that we cannot predict.”

She said the swarm could be “very disturbing” for people who felt the tremors, but the best thing is to be prepared.

“We live in a very active country in terms of tectonics and it is very good to use these swarms as a reminder and to know what to do in case of large events.”
