Julia McHugh: The Old Spanish Days in Santa Barbara Historical and Virtual | South at 101

Photographer Walter Cowling took photos to celebrate the old Spanish days in historic El Paseo in the late 1920s. This year, the annual Santa Barbara event has been reimagined due to COVID-19 and includes an online entertainment broadcast and an outdoor exhibition of the event history.

In the late 1930s and early 1940s, the Seaside Oil Company sponsored posters promoting the Old Spanish Days and displayed them at their service stations from San Diego to San Francisco. Posters, including this one from 1935, were designed by Santa Barbara artist Roy Lahorne. Fiesta is taking safety into account this year, due to the pandemic.

There are no crowds and no public events allowed in the old Spanish days in Santa Barbara this year, due to the pandemic, but there are many events to enjoy online or with social distancing. The old Spanish days live! Neither the 1925 earthquake nor COVID-19 could prevent Santa Barbara from celebrating Rancho’s history with the annual August Festival. There may not be any public gatherings, but many beloved traditions are reimagined.

Fiesta Music & Dance Fridays went live in July. Don’t worry if you miss the videos available to view on Facebook (www.facebook.com/oldspanishdaysfiesta/videos). They include brass Latin jazz band Mezcal Martini (Magnificent Century Division), retro rocker King Bee (singer Rachel S. Thurston Big Sense), local favorite Area 51, Spencer the Gardener, and Tony Ybarra.

The music is peppered with interviews with Fiesta stars and dancing by local companies. (Note: No Facebook account is required to view.) The final concert is on Friday, August 7, 5:30 pm with Fiesta favorites, The Bomby bluesy, Jazzy, and funky.

Music, dance, parades, and exhibit videos from past festivals are also posted. Watch the fiery performances of this year’s Spirit of Fiesta and Junior Spirit of Fiesta – young Spanish dancers who won this honor by auditioning. Also meet Los Ninos de las Flores, local young ladies who distribute flowers at Fiesta in years without a pandemic.

Classic cars and ornate chariots are taking the place of horses and carriages on Friday afternoon’s Caravan Fiesta Parade, which makes its way through Santa Barbara and Montecito. Spectators are asked to practice social distancing. More information at www.sbfiesta.org.

“Project Fiesta: The History of Old Spanish Days” is a free outdoor exhibition in the courtyard of the Santa Barbara Historical Museum that can be viewed until August 22.
